Land records give his mother's name as Lydia; her maiden name may have been Barrett but that is not proven. Sanford was born about 1790, probably in Shrewsbury Township, Rutland, Co., VT, where his parents resided when 1790 and 1800 censuses were taken. The Niles family moved to Ohio by 1802. Sanford married first, Mary Jane "Polly" Ferguson, 20 Aug 1811, in Ashtabula Co., OH. This marriage did not produce any known children and evidently ended in divorce before 1814 when Mary is known to have had a son by another husband (Jonathan Sprague). Sanford married second, Susanna Spooner, 26 Apr 1821, in Ashtabula County. By 1836, he, several of his brothers and their families moved to Illinois, setting in Stephenson and Winnebago Counties. Sanford probably is the "S" Niles listed in Silver Creek Precinct on the 1840 Stephenson County Census (p. 224). There were eight in the household: 1 male age 40-50, 1 female age 20-30, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 10-15, 2 females 05-10 and 2 males Under 5. The last record I find for Sanford is an 1845 land patent in Winnebago County. When or where either he or Susanna died yet is unknown, but he was deceased by 1854.. Sanford and his siblings -- whether dead or alive -- are listed in the will and probate records of a bachelor brother, Thomas Jefferson Niles, who died 7 Apr 1854 in Ridott Township, Stephenson Co., IL. The names of the children of deceased siblings are also given. It took several years to settle TJ's estate; the following proof of heirship was filed in 1858. _________ State of Illinois, Stephenson County: Andrew J. Niles of said county being duly sworn on his oath says that he was well acquainted with Thomas J. Niles, late of said county, in his life time and that he is the Administrator of his estate, that the said Thomas J. Niles died without children and left no widow. That he left surviving him no parents, that his brothers and sisters living at the time of his death are the following viz. Leonard H. Niles, Erastus Niles, David Niles, Lorana Waldo; That his brother Sanford Niles, deceased, left children surviving him Erastus Niles, Lydia Niles, Mary Niles, George R. Niles and Benjamin Niles; That his brother Hiram Niles, deceased, left him surviving, Louisa Niles, Harriet Niles; That his sister Lucy Pool, deceased, left her surviving children Calvin Pool, Alonzo Pool, Abigail Pool, David Pool, Lorana Pool; That his sister Clarissa Marks, deceased, left surviving her at the time of the death of the said Thomas J Niles her children Squire Marks and Calista Webster, both of whom have since died intestate -- that Calista Webster left her three infant children surviving, that this affiant does not certainly know their several names; That the said Squire Marks has also deceased and left no children but left his father John Marks and his sister Calista Webster his only heirs surviving; And further this affiant saith that he knows of no other heirs of the said Thomas J. Niles. (Signed) Andrew J. Niles. Subscribed and Sworn to me this 9th day of July A.D. 1858. D. H. Sunderland, Co. Clerk. ____________________ FYI: Andrew J (Jackson) Niles was a nephew, the son of Sanford's brother Leonard.
