JOHN BAYLOR (Bayler) John Baylor is the second son of John and Catherine Bayler, and was born in the state of Pennsylvania in 1815. In 1827 his parents moved to Franklin County, Ohio, near the city of Columbus, and in 1832 John's father departed this life, leaving Mrs. Baylor the mother of seven children. John assumed the general supervision of his mother and the family for two years after the death of his father, and then, as he wished to see more of life, he emigrated to Illinois, and made his first stop at Fort Clark, now known as Peoria. As he had acquired a good practical knowledge of the blacksmithing business, he did not have any trouble, on his arrival at Fort Clark, to obtain employment, and worked for one year in the first blacksmith shop ever started or carried on at that place, after which he returned to Columbus, Ohio, where he remained engaged in blacksmithing for two years. In 1838 Mr. Baylor was married to Miss Mary Flenniken, who was born in Franklin County, Ohio, in the year 1821. Mr. B. continued his pursuits in blacksmithing in Columbus for two years after his marriage, and in the fall of 1839 again turned his face to the west, and moved, with his family, to the town of Washington, Tazewell County, Illinois, where he carried on blacksmithing for three years, and then bought a valuable tract of land about five and a half miles southwest of the town of Washington, and engaged in improving the same, where he resided for ten years, when, on account of educating his children, he rented out his farm and removed to the town of Morton, and carried on blacksmithing for two years, after which he returned to his farm, where he remained eight years, when he again, on account of schools, disposed of his farm to good advantage, and purchased good and comfortable property in the town of Washington, where he has been successfully engaged in carrying on farming and blacksmithing ever since. 1850 Census Washington Township, Tazewell County, Illinois enumerated October 1850 Dwelling #976, Family #976 BALER, John, age ?, m, Blacksmith, PA ______, Mary, 30, f, OH ______, Mary Jane, 12, f, OH ______, George W., 8, m, IL ______, Charles, 6, m, IL ______, Catherine Ann, 4, f, IL ______, Minerva, 10/12, f, IL GIBSON, Geo., 20, m, Blacksmith, IA 1860 Census Washington Township, Tazewell County, Illinois enumerated June 22, 1860 BAILOR, George, 43, m, farmer, $3000/$2000, born in PA ______, Mary, 39, f, born in OH ______, George, 17, m, born in IL ______, Charles, 15, m, born in IL ______, Catharine, 13, f, born in IL ______, Missourie, 10, f, born in IL ______, Martha, 6, f, born in IL ______, Elizabeth, 2, f, born in IL YODER, ??, 23, m, laborer, born in OH Note: Wonder why he was listed as George???? 1870 Census Town of Washington, Tazewell County, Illinois enumerated June 15, 1870 Dwelling #145, Family #145 BAYLOR, John, 55, m/w, Blacksmith, $18,000/$5,000, born in Pennsylvania _______, Mary, 47, f/w, house keeping, born in Ohio _______, Minerva, 18, f/w, born in Illinois _______, Martha, 15, f/w, born in Illinois _______, Elizabeth, 12, f/w, born in Illinois _______, Emma, 7, f/w, born in Illinois 1880 Census Washington Township, Tazewell County, Illinois Enumerated June 1880.
