Notes
a. Note:   Wiley Friend was a farmer all his life. He came to Kansas in a covered wagon with his parents. They first settled at Lebo, Kansas. In 1896 they moved to a farm west of Severy, Kansas in the Twin Grove School District. In the early 1900's his parents, brothers and sisters all moved to a farm north of Centralia, Oklahoma. Wiley remained in Greenwood County, Kansas and lived on a farm near Severy until 1912, when he moved his family to a farm about five miles north of Howard, Kansas in Elk County. His daughter, Della, remembers he told her that when they came to Kansas in a covered wagon, the older children would walk beside the wagon, and in places it was so rough they would have to hold the stove lids down to keep them from shaking off the stove. Wiley played the guitar and harmonica. 1910 Census Paw Paw Township, Elk County, Kansas enumerated April 20-21-22, 1910 Dwelling #53, Family #53 FRIEND, Wiley M., head, w/m, 30, MO OH IL, general farmer ______, Gertie, wife, w/f, 21, NE England WI, married 4 years, mother of 1, 1 living ______, Ethel, daughter, w/f, 14 months, KS MO NE World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 Name: Wiley Micheal Friend City: Howard County: Elk State: Kansas Birth Date: 23 Sep 1877 Race: White Roll: 1643514 DraftBoard: 0 Age: 40 Occupation: farmer/self employed Nearest Relative: Girtie Friend Height/Build: tall/medium Color of Eyes/Hair: blue/brown Signature: Wiley Michael Friend Date: September 12, 1918 1920 Census Paw Paw Township, Elk County, Kansas enumerated January 15, 1920 Dwelling #82, Family #84 FRIEND, Wiley M., head, m/w, 42, MO OH IL, farmer _______, Gertie, wife, f/w, 31, NE England WI _______, Ethel, daughter, f/w, 10, KS MO NE _______, Violet, daughter, f/w, 8, KS MO NE _______, Vern, son, m/w, 7, KS MO NE _______, Della, daughter, f/w, 4, KS MO NE 1930 Census Paw Paw Township, Elk County, Kansas enumerated April 2, 1930 Dwelling #12, Family #13 FRIEND, Wiley, head, m/w, 51, MO OH IL, farmer-general farmer, married at age 28 _______, Gertie, wife, f/w, 41, NE England WI, married at age 17 _______, Ethel, daughter, f/w, 20, KS MO NE, single _______, Violet, daughter, f/w, 19, KS MO NE, single _______, Vern, son, m/w, 17, KS MO NE, single _______, Della, daughter, f/w, 14, KS MO NE, single The Howard Courant-Citizen, Howard, Elk County, Kansas, May 21, 1953 Wiley Friend's brother and sister visited him last Friday and Saturday.
