a. Note:   Will was the second child of Gerhard and Jennie and the first boy. He grew u p in an atmosphere of river, produce and ranch, and Gerhard hoped that he wou ld take to some part of it. He became a very capable business mand and ranch m anager for he had a knack of planting the right crop and getting the highest price. He knew markets, climates and needs. When celery froze in New Jersey , his was ready in California. During the depression years he managed the ra nch well, but, unfortunately, he had too many personal problems and Jennie gave him an early inheritance after which he rather faded out of the family p icture. He had a wife, Bessie, who came from Nova Scotia, and three children : William, Allen and Mary. He died at age 53, from a severe phlebitis of his leg.
