a. Note:   Gertrude Melvin was the daughter of slaves Sam Melvin (formerly Sam Beard) and Helen McCall Melvin. On 1 Nov 1900, Gertrude, 19, married Amos McLaurin, 25, (son of Richard Mclaurin and Fannie Mclaurin). According to the 1910 census, Gertrude is widowed by 1910. She reportedly has two children at the time John, 8, and Jessie, 6. In 1910, the widowed Melvin gives birth to a son fathered by Charlie McNeill (son of Reverend Anderson McNeill and Margaret Wilson McNeill).
