From "Douglas L. Whipple" Isaac moved to northwestern Ohio about 1858 from Delaware County New York. He was served during the Civil War. Not sure if he was drafted or enlisted. He was wounded during the battle of Atlanta and was discharged shortly thereafter. Believe his wounds were only miner. He received a proclamation from President Abrham Lincoln for his service during the war. I've never heard that he did anything special during the war. ??? He returned to northwestern Ohio and married Margaret Catherine Falkner. If you read any of the history of Fulton or Williams county, Margartet's father (John Peter) was prominent in the settlement of this area of the country. Margartet was born in Baden Germany on May 27, 1843. Her parent's names are John Peter Falkner and Margaret Loutermilch. Isaac and Margaret were married in North Morenci, Mich. on Oct 23, 1864. Shortly after they were married, he and Margaret moved back to Delaware County New York. They lived in or near Clovesville were the first of their 3 children were born. These are Abraham Lincoln Whipple - b) Setember 15, 1865 Caroline Bertha Whipple - b) December 13, 1866 Charles A. Whipple - b) January 26, 1868 Soon after Charles's birth they moved back to nortwestern Ohio and settled near Elmira, Ohio. Isaac bought 80 acres and farmed. He did not have the 80 acres long and swapped it for 180 acres (I believe, this info can be found in the historical records for Fulton and Williams County.). Here 7 more children were born. They are John Peter - b) October 18. 1869 Idella (Ida) Jane - b) August 9, 1871 George Walter - b) September 8, 1872 Willie A. - b) 30 May 1874 & d) September 4, 1874 Albert (Bert) A. - b)6 August 1875 Mary Ann - b) 21 September 1877 Margaret Carrie - b) 19 February 1880 I provided Willie's death date for many do not know of him. He died a few months after being born. Most references I've seen of Isaac and Margaret fail to mention him. Abraham (Abe) Lincoln Whipple was named after his father and the president of the U.S. I have been told by a descendant of Abe's that Isaac received his proclamation from the President, was impressed by him and so named his son Abraham. I don't know for sure. Also, and I think just as important, Abe was probably named after Isaac's father. Isaac started a Family Bible. Isaac so stated that the Bible was to be given to the eldest child upon his death. When that child died, it was to go to the eldest living child at that time. Meaning, the last living child would inherit theBible and it was theirs to do with as they wished. This infuriated Abe. He thought since he was the eldest it should be his. Abe did inherit all of Isaac's Civil War memoribilia. This includes Isaac's rifle, a sword and the proclamation. Today all of these items (and I believe a few more) belong to Abe's great-grandson, Mike who lives in Atlanta, Ga. Abe, started his own Family Bible as a result of not inheriting the one Isaac started. John Peter Whipple (4th eldest child) out-lived all of his bothers and sisters. He died July 16, 1955. He is my great grandfather. And I remember him very well even tbough I was 5 when he died. Grandpa John stated that the eldest Whipple of his descendants to carry on the family name (thus the eldest male with a last name of Whipple) was to receive the Family Bible. My dad was the one. Actually, after my great grandfather died, his eldest child, Marie had the Bible for many years and mantained and kept it up to date. When she died, my dad at last received it. Since your ISP is fulton-net.com, I presume you live in Fulton County. If you do and have never noticed, look at the Oblisk in front of the County Courthouse building in Wauseon. On it is the names of the people who where from that area who served in the Civil War. On it will be Isaac's name. Also, another Whipple by the name of Basil(?) is also recorded.
