Note: Melvin Howard Bush stole a horse when he was young, so the story goes. This would be in 1910+, and penalties were quite severe (varying from state to state) for this offense. In an attempt to evade authorities he changed his name to Buckley Howard and enlisted in the U.S. Army under this name. He eventually became a Colonel in WWI. He and his wife, Nell, worked at some time in the State of California for the Forestry Service, overseeing the "lookout tower" for the forest--- this information according to Loretta Bush, 11/98. His death certificate, for whom the informant was sister Frances' grandson Jon Fry, lists his mother as Matilda Snider and Father as "Thomas Howard" rather than Thomas Henry Bush.
