Notes
a. Note:   Oxfordshire Branch I 1.(1). AKA - Rechard Elkyn(g)ton, Richard Elkin(g)ton
Richard Elkynton is the earliest member of the Oxfordshire Elkington family from which a continuous pedigree can be deduced. He may have been the grandson or great grandson of William Elkynton of Williamscote, a nearby hamlet.(a) He was Church warden of Cropredy in 1543. His elder children were born before the Cropredy registers commence, but they are named in his will:-
  Oxfordshire Branch I 1.(1)
Richard is the earliest member of the family from which a continuous pedigree can be deduced. Most likely, he was born between 1505 and 1515, and may have been a grandson or a great grandson of the William Elkinton who was granted land in Williamscote, a nearby hamlet, in 1445 (a). He was Churchwarden, of Cropredy, in 1543. Though his occupation is not stated in his will, it is probable that he was a Yoeman, renting his land. His elder children were born before the Cropredy registers commence, but they are named in his will. He was buried at Cropredy, 19 October 1557, and, it is known from the will of his son, Richard, that his widow Alice, was buried at Mollington, a nearby village, but the record does not appear on the Mollington registers. His will, dated 8 January 1556/7 was proved 31 March 1558. He provides that he shall be buried in the Church at Cropredy and gives small legacies to the Church. He leaves his wife, Alice, one third of his goods, appoints his son John, his executor, and leaves his goods, unbequeathed to all his children alive and unmarried, mentioning his sons Michael and Thomas. To every household rich or poor, in Bourton, he leaves 2d. apiece. Bouton is a neighbouring village to Cropredy, and this legacy suggests that the family lived there. As the value of money, at that time, was, probably, between 50 and 60 times that of the present day (1966), the legacy of 2d was not so insignificant as it sounds.
  (a) Overtone Deeds, 2029, Northants Record Office, Northampton
  Postscript.
There is no recorded connection with the contemporary family of similar name in Leicestershire which had its roots in Northamptonshire.
From the dates of the two known records dated 1430 and 1435 with references to William Elkynton of Williamscote, it it more probable that Richard would have been the great grandson of William, if he were indeed descended of him.
  (a) Grant, John Danvers of Wardyngton to Richard Danvers of Prestcote, Richard Cok of Williamescote, William Elkynton of Williamescote, John Warner of Williamescote and John Rogger of Wardyngton, of all lands held by him in Wardyngton and Williamescote 7 July [1445].
  (b) Further evidence of William Elkynton has been found recently. It is it unlikely that power of attorney would have been given to a minor (viz. date ).
1st January 1430. Power of attorney by John Danvers of Cothrop, William Breton & John Kent, clerks, Henry Ffrebody, Richard Moorton and John Warner to William Elkynton and Peter Austeyn for delivery, in accordance with a charter, to
John Cosyn of Williamscote of seisin of pasture in Williamscote.
