a. Note:   NOTES ON RICHARD ADDISON COWARD Richard a. Coward was born in either Barnwell Dist.,South Carolina or in Liberty Co.,Georgia.His father Hardy Coward was in Liberty Co.,Ga.in 1806 so he probably was born There.In 1808 Hardy moved with his wife and family to Amite Co.,Mississippi.The family is listed in the 1820 Mississippi Census so they moved sometime abt 1824 or 1825 to St. Landry Parish,Louisiana.In October 20,1826 Richard married Eleanor Henderson,daughter of John Henderson and Martha Foster,and the family was established in St. Landry at that time.In About 1830 Eleanor died.Richard then married Harriet Buckner Smith.They were married in Amite Co.,Miss.in 1831 So Richard went back there for the marriage.He had probably known her when he was growing up in Mississippi.Richard's occupation Is listed as a Planter in the 1850 Census of Calcasieu in Louisiana.He is also mentioned as having a mill on Choupique Bayou in Thomas Rigmaiden's Diary so he milled corn for some of the other inhabitants of early Calcasieu Parish.Richard also had a number of cattle which he grazed in Louisiana and Texas as witnessed by his brand which was registered on July 19,1846 in the Jefferson Co.,Texas Brand Book.In the early 1850's Richard,along with his brother Needham,his bro-in-law Samuel J. Perkins and Samuel's mother Martha Morgan Perkins Moved to Galveston Co.,Texas where he remained for the rest of his life.In 1861 he joined the Magnolia Rangers(CSA) with Most of his kin.In Texas he raised cattle and planted crops. He died May 19,1867 in Galveston Co.,Texas and was buried in the old Magnolia Cemetery near Clear Creek. WILL OF RICHARD COWARD In the Name of God Amen I Richard Coward Planter of the State of Texas County of Galveston Knowing all men must die and the time of Death uncertain and being in sound mind and memory doe make this my last will and testament.Before I Surrender my Mortal Body to the dust from whence it came and Cosign My Immortal Soul to its Maker and Eternal Judge-I Richard Coward do will and order that at my Death all my property both Real and Personal to be placed in the possession of my loving and Beloved Wife Harriot B. Coward whome I love so much to be used so injoyed by her during her natural life and after her death is is to decend and be distributed in the following manner among my children. My Son William Coward and my daughter Jane Coward wife of J. V. Moss having had their Mother part I leave to the lawfull heir(s) of the fore named William Coward and his sister Jane Coward Deceace to have a Equal Part of my Property Except the Real Estate. My Son Austin Coward to have a Equal Part of all my Property. Zylphanna Coward the wife of David Lyion(Lyons) to have a Equal Part of all the Property Margareta V. Coward the wife of James McFaden(McFaddin) to have a Equal Part of all the Property Joseph W. Coward to have a Equal Part of all the Property Emily M. Coward the wife of Sevan Jerue(Jirou) to have a Equal Part of all the Property Richard Coward Jr. to have a Equal Part of all the Property Harriot Whyonner Coward to have a Equal Part of the Property Minerva Anner Coward to have a Equal Part of all Property- - - - It is my request after all my debt is paid that my beloved wife Harriot B. Coward be not desterbes or interfered with in any manor or way.She shall not be required to give Bond but things left to her better Judgement.But never the less not withstanding such desire and will of it should become evident in the oppion of an investigating court that my wife & widow should be wasting the property to be called upon to give an indenture and Bond for the forthcoming of the property at her death or it equivalent in money. I order to have this my last Will and Testament carried out and Executed Thereby now inate appoint my Wife Harriot B. Coward my lawful Executer with the hope that she will premote the end of this my last Will and Testament and allso appoint my Son Austin Coward if surviving at the time of his mother death to act as one of the admistrators on my estate with who so ever may act.{By the grace of God There unto affix my Hand and Scroll having no Seal my scroll for the same this 15th day of Jany in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-six.
