HANCOCK, THOMAS was born ca 1789 NJ, and his wife, Permelia, was born ca 1798, Mass, and they were listed in the 1850 census of Marion Twp, Livinston Co MI with Merritt Havens age 36 b NY, and his Havens children: Charlotte, age 14; Henrietta age 10; William age 8; Delia age 6, Merritt age 5 in their household. Permelia, possibly of this family, married 17 Oct 1845 to William Waters, in Howell.
Pat K e-mail 8/20/98 "...I did find that Thomas Hancock bought land in Marion Township in 1836 and sold it in 1847 and 1855. Do you suppose that Alanson was living on Thomas' land? If he sold it in 1855 that might be why the family moved to Illinois.... Do you suppose that Eliza/Elizabeth came back to Michigan to live with her mother after her father and Alanson died?"

GENDIS shows that Merritt S Havens died 1 Jan 1877 in Marion, Livingston County, Michigan (white, male, married, age 66 years, occ: farmer; cause: consumption; birthplace & parents unkn; recorded 6 July 1878)
Why is Merritt Havens living with Thomas and Permelia Hancock in 1850? At one time, I thought that Merritt's first wife was a Hancock, but apparently that is not the case. Southeastern Michigan Pioneer Families Especially Livingston County AND New York Origins compiled by Helen F Lewis 1995 (state library) pg 128 shows that Merritt Havens md 15 Jan 1836 Marion Twp, Livingston Co MI to Sally T Austin d/o David and the 1911 Howell Twp History confirms his wife as Sally Austin but shows location as Howell Twp.
Does anyone know why Merritt Havens is living with the Hancocks in 1850?
