Note: G. W. Varner was an infant in 1870. It was customary for infants to be adopted out if their mother died, even if their father was still alive. Single parent households were not an option in the 1870’s, so the father might sign a guardianship document to be filed at the courthouse giving custody of the infant to another family. Guardianship was not the same as we think of adoption. The child retained his or her surname even though living with another family. When we checked the county guardianship documents, we found a guardianship form, signed by William Varner and Sandy Varner. The document says “HIS” child, so therefore, G. W. Varner is the son of Sandy Varner. Sandy shared G. W.’s guardianship rights with William Varner.
