Notes
a. Note:   With the will of William Varner and the 1880 Federal census, we determined that George M. Varner was the son of William Varner, and therefore, G. W. Varner was the grandson of William Varner and the farm where G. W. lived was the original Tennessee Varner homestead. Since William listed three sons in his will, one of them had to be G. W.´s father. George M. Varner is definitely G. W.´s uncle according to the 1880 census. That leaves John Varner and William H. Varner as suspects. But who is Sandy Varner, listed as Sarah Markham´s brother in 1880? John W. Varner, eldest son of William Varner, moved his family to Sebastian County, Arkansas (Ft. Smith) after 1866 and appeared on the 1870 census in that county, with his wife Deborah Jane and four children; Mary, Martha, Victoria and Benjamin F. Varner (born 1866 in TN). This made him unlikely as the father of G. W. John´s daughter Mary was married and widowed twice (Robinson & Neal). Victoria married Thomas Toller in Ft. Smith, 1891, living in Muldrow in 1900 with 5 daughters. Benjamin was still single in 1900, listed as head-of-household with his sister Mary and her daughter, Lula Robinson in the Choctaw Nation. It is likely that, as the youngest, Benjamin cared for his parents until their death, presumed to have occurred sometime between 1880 and 1900 in Indian Territory. The only other mention of a William H. Varner was in the 1850 census, when he was a lad of 14 living with his family. Yet his father mentions him in a will in 1870; therefore, we believe that William H. Varner IS Sandy Varner. Since both the father and son had the same first name it is quite likely the son acquired the nickname of Sandy, then began using it as his legal name when he became an adult. The Gibson County 1870 Federal census does not list any members of the Varner family, even though we know they were still in Gibson County by looking at the date on the above will. It was not unusual, especially in the South, for people to be missed or left off the 1870 census. Some were wanted for war crimes committed in the Civil War, others were afraid of retribution, and these combined with the disorganization of the local governments after the War caused a lot of misses. However, Sandy Varner was found in the 1870 census, located in Blue Township, Pottawatomie County, Kansas (northeast of Manhattan, Kansas). This Sandy Varner was born the same year and in the same state as Sarah Markham´s brother. By studying previous censuses, we know there were no other Varners born in the same year and same state, which indicates these were the same man. The 1860 census entry for Sandy is a bit misleading. He is still living at home with his parents, running the farm, but his name is recorded as ``Somay´´ or ``Somny´´ and he is listed as female! 35 1698 1721 VARNER Wm, 58 MFarmer 1,000 800 NC 36 1698 1721 VARNER Mary, 57 FNC 37 1698 1721 VARNER Somny, 24 F 500 NC 38 1698 1721 VARNER Elizabeth, 16 FTenn 39 1698 1721 VARNER George, 14 M Tenn
