Note: Although a mill owner at Mill Bridge, near Leeds, very little is known yet. The letter heads show him as 'William Wood and Sons', makers of Woollen, Worsted and Cotton Carding machines, and all kinds of teazors or fearnaughts, shake-wolleys etc. for the preparation of Wool and Cotton Rag Machines & etc. All got up in the neatest style and made upon the most improved principles. Iron turning up rests, iron turning up pulleys and turning up head stocks & etc. All kinds of stickles for grinding cards to the circular or flat, tacks for nailing cards, doffing and cleaning plates and flocks for cards. The engraving was done by Delarue and Duncan and shows a view of the mill. This mill is very hard to find on any map. On the marriage certificate of his son, Wainman to Sarah Lawford in 1872, he is described as '[deceased]' and a 'Machine maker'. At 41 Wainman 's work was a 'mechanic'. Extract from Liversedge Parish records (KC120.3) 1845-1848 was a period of major civil unrest lots of special constables were appointed in case of trouble - normally they made do with one or two - in 1845 there were 100 constables, but in 1848 and 1849 the numbers had dropped, the place of abode and profession of each was listed :- Woods as Special Constables 1845 George Wood Mill Bridge Machine Maker 1845 Samuel Wood Hightown Machine Maker 1849 William Wood Mill Bridge Machine Maker 1848 William Wood Mill Bridge Machine Maker The constables had to be 'professional' men or have their own businesses. There were never any gentry or labourers on the list. 17.02.1848 West Riding of Yorkshire At a meeting of the inhabitants of the Township of Liversedge in Vestry held after due summons the 11th day of February 1848 at 11 o'clock in the forenoon for the purpose of making out A List of Forty Men residing within the said Township of Liversedge and qualified and liable to serve as constables for such Township to be returned to Her Majesty's Justices of the peace in and for the County of York acting in and for the Dewsbury Division in the said county.
