Notes
a. Note:   ife Margaret and grandson of Drury Richardson c1740-1811 and wife Sarah was a Baptist pastor and a farmer. There are no family stories which have been passed down to provide a insight into the man or a diary left behind. Only official records remain to tell the story of Noah Richardson. From these the beginnings of the portrait of Noah can be sketched. Noah was trained for the ministry at Friendship Baptist Church. he became a circuit-camp meeting preacher traveling from just below Carthage up towards Elise now Robbins. Along his circuit was the Bethlehem Meeting House. On 10-5-1834 Noah Richardson-Artemas Shattuck and Jesse Sowell signed the official declaration establishing Bethlehem Baptist Church. Noah was asked to serve as first pastor. All accounts show Noah Richardson served Bethlehem Baptist Church faithfully and zealously for 32 years. While attending to the needs of the members of Bethlehem he also had churches in other locations. In a letter of 8-10-1845 he tells Samuel Waite of Wake Forest University "I am going to set out in the morning for my church in Richmond..I have had some very fine meeting at my churches this season some additions and generally large and attentive congregations." Noah held revivals almost every year baptizing 325 per sons during his 32 year tenure at Bethlehem. In 1860 88 were baptized in one day. Noah's favorite hymn according to W.H. H. Lawhon was "In Evil Long I Took Delight". In W.H. H. Lawhon's words "during his 'Noah' pastorate peace and harmony prevailed". It appears Noah was a devout man and well respected within the county. he served as a juror-tax valuator in District 9-as a road hand and was appointed guardian to the children of Samuel Jackson as well as guardian of Napoleon B. Taylor. He wrote a biographical sketch of Ralph Freeman a feed slave who became an ordained minister for Purefoy's History of the Sandy Creek Baptist Association in 1858. Rev. James McDonald of Fayetteville preached Noah's funeral service. Rev. McDonald stated in his sermon that "Noah Richardson in his day was the best preacher in North Carolina. He was especially gifted in prayer-exhortation and preaching. He had power with God and God gave him power with man." It must have been along Noah's circuit that he met Elizabeth Cheek 1802-1877. Many of Noah's descendants through Joe J. Richardson still live within the area he ministered to. Noah and Elizabeth are buried in a field located off of Bethlehem Church Road in a small family cemetery. By 1976 their headstones-field stone had been lost due to farming operations in the area.
