a. Note:   Born in France, Joined the French army at age 14. Fought against the British at Santo Domingo (now know as Haiti) was taken prisoner, taken to S.C. and later released. He made his way to Philadelphia, Pa. where he became a naturalized citizen and some of his children were born there. From there the family made it to New Orleans, La. Fl�ury got to New Orleans in time to fight in the Battle of New Orleans. He was made Chief Accountant, an immense task, a few before him had been able to keep a clear record of the expedition's finances. He found time to court and marry a planter's daughter. The Haitian fiasco forced him and his family to seek refuge in the United Stated. They stopped at Philadelphia but still longed for a sunny climate. Fleury went ahead by boat down the Ohio River, then the Mississippi, taking notes and sketching. On Christmas Eve in 1814, he wrote in his diary: "Arrived in New Orleans at four o'clock in the afternoon and found the city besieged by the English"
