Note: Jack's Work... Jack worked for the Southwestern States Telephone Company at the time of his death. He was an exchange repairman. Earlier in his life, he worked building power lines for the REA (and I believe this was his work when he met his future wife, Winnie Belle Teel). Anecdotes... At one time Jack did some work associated with the ice house in Mineola, Tx. I know this because when I was about 16 years old, my summer job was hauling ice from the Mineola ice house to the Grand Saline ice house. There was an older man who managed the Mineola ice house. This man was known as "Cap" . Well, Cap and I had a disagreement one day and he told me that I was just as stubborn as my father. Until this day, I had no idea that Cap knew who I was. When I told Jack about this, he just grinned and said something like ".. so you met Cap did you?". He did not elaborate on his relationship with Cap. Scoutmaster of troop 373... Jack was the scoutmaster of troop 373 in Grand Saline during my years as a scout. He was very well liked by the members of the troop. Almost every time I return to Grand Saline to this day (1994) I reminisce with someone who remembers his days as a member of troop 373. We attended a national Boy Scout Jamboree in Valley Forge, Penn. in the summer of 1949. Attendees from troop 373 were Jack, my brother Gene, myself, and Charles Moore (who grew up to be a Methodist pastor). The preceding scoutmaster of troop 373 was the Rev. Bill Thomas, a Grand Saline native and Baptist preacher/pastor/evangelist. The above supplied by Jack Douglas Long on April 30, 1994. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
