Notes
a. Note:   George Jr. built a homestead farm on a hundred acre lot (No. 96) in Gorham acquired during the "second division." In March 1824, he sold a portion of this land, adjoining Zebulon Whitney and Ensign John Johnson, to David Johnson for $540. The other part of the homestead, adjoining David and Matthew Johnson, he sold to John Johnson for $535. The deed was witnessed by Thomas Johnson. (Book 98, Pages 245 and 247) Then in June 1824, George, yeoman of Gorham, purchased 70 acres of land in Harrison, Maine, from Elliot Harmon of Harrison for the sum of $750. This deed was witnessed by his son Lewis Hanscom. (Book 98, Page 407)
The 1790 Census for Gorham/Scarborough shows the household of George Jr. included one male 16 years old or older, one male under 16, and 6 females. The 1810 census for Gorham lists his household as containin
1 male over 45 (George Jr.) 1 male 16-26 (Lewis, born 1792) 1 male 10-16 (George III, born 1797) 1 male under 10 (Marrett, born 1799) 1 female over 45 (Eunice, George's wife) 1 female 26-45 (Abigail, born 1778) 1 female 16-26 (Nancy, born 1786) The family can not be located in the 1820 census but the 1830 census of Harrison, Maine, suggests that George was living with his youngest son Marrett. Therefore, it is likely that Eunice died between the census of 1810 and 1830 and George died sometime between the census of 1830 and 1840. (Robert Hanscom, GenForun msg dated May 18, 2001)
The Centennial History of Harrison, Maine, (p. 123), states that George Hanscom, the father of Abigail and Patience, was deceased in 1835.
Maine separated from Massachusetts on March 15, 1820 and was admitted to the Union. (VDL)
