Note: George moved to Henrietta, New York, not far from where his older brothers John and Cyrus lived in Mendon. Then he moved to Michigan where he was one of the first American settlers in Shelby Township, Macomb County. Land records show that he purchased 88 acres in 1823 and another 88 acres in 1825. At the first meeting of the inhabitants of Shelby in May 1827, George was elected a pound-keeper. The 1830 census of Shelby shows nine persons in "George Handscom's" household--two males under 5 years, one male between 5 and 10 years, 1 male between 10 and 15 years, 1 male between 15 and 20 years, one male between 30 and 40 years, 2 females between 5 and 10 years, and one female between 30 and 40 years.
