Notes
a. Note:   George moved from Scarborough to Gorham about the year 1760, settling on the thirty acre lot #109 which he purchased from John Williams. The tax bill for the town of Gorham, ME for the year 1763 contains the earliest list of names of the inhabitants of Gorham. The bill contains the name of George Hanscom along with the names: John, Joseph, James, Thomas and William Irish; and Samuel, Walter, John, and Ebenezer Murch. (History of Gorham by McLellan)
Cumberland County land records show that George, a cordwainer of Scarborough, purchased a 30 acre lot of land and house from John Williams of Gorhamtown on July 7, 1759 for a sum of 40 pounds. (Book 2, Page 301) He sold this same property to Micah Whitney of Gorham for 100 pounds on May 18, 1786. (Book 14, Page 499)
The 1790 Census for Gorham/Scarborough shows that George's household included 3 males 16 years old or older, 1 male under 16, and 2 females.
I haven't found a record of George's death so I can't be sure when and where he died; however, it certainly was after he deeded land in Gorham to his son John on August 19, 1792, and mostly likely after May 5, 1800, when his son George sign a deed as George, Jr.(LEC)
Maine separated from Massachusetts on March 15, 1820 and was admitted to the Union. (VDL)
