As a young man Aaron went to Scarborough where his brothers George and Elisha and sisters Sarah and Abigail had already gone. After marrying, he and his wife moved to Machias where they had 11 children. (Hanscom Family Newsletter)
Aaron served as a private in Capt. Joseph Seavey's Company in the defense of Machias and adjacent rivers in 1777. Then he re-enlisted and served for 8 months under General Wadsworth in 1780. (Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors Vol. 7, p. 1236)
