Notes
a. Note:   Baptised as Elkinton. Weaver then Engineer. James appears to have separated from his wife Susanna. The time and place of his marriage to Emma Clarke has not been traced in England, nor the record of the birth her son, James E., born in February 1855 in England. See footnote. He emigrated to America in 1855/1856 and was followed by Emma Elkington nee Clarke in September 1856.
He and Emma are recorded in the 1860 Census of New London, Connecticut, USA. Also present was his brother John and their mother Amelia. In February 1865 James & his family left New London for California, travelling via Panama, and arriving March 1865. They settled in Napa in October 1866 and filed for a homestead May 19 1868.
Correspondence from Cecelia M. Setty nee Elkington in 2009 -
"One interesting detail about James (1828) he was a taxidermist too."I
Several Elkingtons of Coventry were taxidermists, either as a hobby or trade, including one who did not emigrate.
  Footnote.
It is not known whether James migrated to the Tewkesbury/Longdon area where Emma lived and worked in 1851, or whether he and Emma migrated to London, separately or together. Emma had close relatives in both places. There were silk & weaving works in both Spitalfields in London, and in Tewkesbury, 4 miles from Longdon (the place of birth of Emma's father, Thomas Clarke) as well as Coventry.
