a. Note:   r brother William. He was elected a Freeman of Coventry in May 1858, but does not appear there in the 1861 census. He emigrated to Connecticut, probably with his mother and William. He and his mother Amelia are recorded in the 1860 census of New London, Connecticut with his elder brother James and his wife. He served in the Union Army from April to August in 1861. He received a pension.
  Possibly the John and Mary M. residing in Sutter, Sacramento in 1900 and possibly the John and Mary V. residing in Otay, San Diego, California in1910.
  Correspondence from Cecelia M. Setty nee Elkington in 2009 -
 "John was born 14 Apr 1837. John did die on 26 May 1914 at Imperial Beach, San Diego County, Ca. (from Military records.)"
 "John was only in the service for 90 days. His enlistment can be added for I have the U.S. pension file (copy) to back it up."
 "John was living in Napa in the 1874 directory, with family, and had a taxidemist shop. He later moved to Berkeley, Sacramento, and died in Imperial Beach, Ca. He had remarried, Mary V. Shaver (widow of E.W. Shaver) 31 Oct 1906 in Portland Ore. from government records. There were trips by the family to Portland, from my records."
Note:   In 1851 he was Watchmaker's Apprentice living with his widowed mother, Amelia, and his younge
