Note: obably born in London or in Longdon, Gloucestershire. His age was given as 1 1/2 in the Shipping list of Sep 12 1856 **. Declared aged 5 in the 1860 Federal Census. His parents settled firstly in New London, Connecticut, and in 1865 migrated to California. He went to San Francisco about 1879. In the census of 1900 he declared that his wife was the mother of five children, three of whom had survived. One Correspondence from Cecelia M. Setty nee Elkington Setty in April 2009 - "James was born 3 Feb 1855, according to church records." *** "According to family records and death certificate James Edward was born 3 Feb 1855 in London." "All I have for the birth of James Edward is from his death certificate and newspaper accounts of his death." "James and Anna (Rice) had another son named Francis born 21 Jun 1885 and died 29 Oct 1886 in San Francisco. We have no record of other children." "He moved to San Francisco in or around 1879 (the year he married my grandmother Anna Louise Rice)..I think James (1855) moved to San Francisco because he wasn't into the strain of farming and his father and mother had deeded their property to him, which he later (1883) deeded back to them. He was working at making furniture in Napa and S.F.
