Note: Dawson, William Penn: Pvt./2 Lt.; enlisted 11/28/61 at Fort Donelson, TN; captured POW at Fort Donelson, TN 2/16/62; sent to prison at Camp Douglas, IL; POW at Camp Douglas, IL, sent to Vicksburg, MS 9/5/62 to be exchanged; POW received on board steamer Jno. H. Done near Vicksburg, MS 9/20/62; promoted to 2 Lt. 9/23/62; tendered his resignation at Tilton, GA 12/28/63; signs November/December 1863 Muster Roll as Commanding the Company; resigned 1/15/64; although absent, on 1/26/64 Muster Roll as age 30. TN Pension # 15320, Crockett County, 12-3-1917: Accepted. TN Civil War Questionnaire: Resident of Bells, Crockett County, TN; born in Stewart County, TN; parents had a log house; enlisted in 1861 before the close of summer and sent to Ft. Donaldson; about three or four months after enlistment took part in battle of Ft. Donaldson, Stewart Co.; captured in battle, sent to prison to Lake shore, near Chicago, stayed 7 months, was exchanged and sent to Cairo, Ill, by rail and then by boat to Vicksburg. Regiment sent to Jackson, Miss., and reorganized, then I was elected Lieutenant without solicitation. Served one year and resigned. Resignation accepted, and then joined Forrest's command and was a scout under Gen. Abe Buford, was in the service until Hood went to Nashville. Not long until surrender of Lee. Being a scout, was not with the Army at time of surrender, consequently had no discharge. Also stated on Civil WarQuestionairre that he attended Sulpher Mill Academy School in Henry County, Tn. He lived and worked in Clarkesville, Tenn. at a Dry Goods Store, in 1866, the year he was married, and spent four years there, then he moved to Bells, in Crockett County, Tn.(formerly Haywood County). Was in Dry Goods 27 years and reared a family of 7 children. Held positions on Board and City Municipal Board. Stated References as Isaam G. Harris, knew Honorable John F. House (well). Knew William B. Bate, and many others. Born June 26, 1833 in Stewart County, TN; died October 21, 1922 in Crockett County, TN; buried Belleview Cemetery, Crockett County, TN; son of Daniel & Mary (Randle) Dawson; husband of Isabelle Michaux (Laurie) Dawson. In his daughter's obituary, Mary Tarbell Dawson lists her father as a Captain. She was the State Historian for Tennessee. She would have been in a position to know.
