March 3, 1847 Dr. Shepherd Laurie, among the persons nominated by President James K. Polk for appointment in the several regiments of infantry authorized by the Act of February 11, 1847, entitiled, "An act to raise for a limited time an additional military force(in Mexico), and for other purposes, was "Shepherd Laurie, of the State of Arkansas, to be Assistant Surgeon". After a report from Mr. Dix of the Military Committee, the Senate, by unanimous consent, agreed to Shepherd Laurie's nomination. JOURNAL of the EXECUTIVE PROCEEDINGS of the Senate, 1845-1848, pp. 235, 240. He is buried in Little Rock, Arkansas, Historic Mount Holly Cemetery, in Lot 98 S. Cedar, Mrs. C. Laurie Lot. Tombstone says "HE WAS LAURIE". Dr. Lorenzo Gibson was born on 27 May 1804 in Clarksville, Montgomery, Tennessee. He died on 26 Oct 1866 in Little Rock, Pulaski, Arkansas.
