Note: Benjamin Franklin Rittenhouse was appointed clerk in the Treasury Department, Washington D.C. in June 1819, when he was not quite fourteen years old, and continued in office(with the exception of a short time having resigned his position) until 1883, the year of his death. Part of the time he was Chief clerk of the Register's Bureau. He was appointed by Joseph Nourse, the first Register of the Treasury, who had married his great Aunt, Maria Bull, and who had been made Register by President Washington. SOURCE: James H. He was a clerk but with substantial real estate assessed at $12, 000 and personal goods at $1,000. His first wife ISOBEL SCOTT LAURIE had died in 1833 just 10 years after they were married. There were 3 daughter by this marriage, ISOBEL, EMILY and ELIZABETH but they were all married and not living at home with the father at this date. His second wife was HENRIETTA WARING DAVIDSON and their eldest daughter HENRIETTA was already married and not living with her parents.
