a. Note:   Luther Darling made his living as a farmer and in lumber. On 21 Dec 1863 he enlisted in Company F. of the 16th Heavy Artillery which was engaged in the battles of Antietam, West Point, Fredricksburg, Petersburg and Yorktown. Following his military service, the family moved to Dolgeville, New York where they lived on Van Buren Street. In the 1865 Census of Salisbury, Herkimer Co, Town of Salisbury, house 118 (a frame house worth $150) household 104 is Luther Darling, age 45 b Conn, has had 1 marriage, is now married, is a farmer and a land owner. His wife Alice is listed as 30, born in Oswego Co, and has had 5 children. Only 4 children are listed; Elisha, age 12, b Oswego Co., Emery, 8 b Herkimer Co; Irving age 5, Herkimer Co. and Travers age 1 1/12 born Herk Co. From other info, Luther is in Salisbury in the 50, 55, 6-, 65, 70, 75, 70, 92 and 1900 Censuses. (By himself in 1900) Born, variously, in June 1823, in 1824 in Conn, and 3 Jan 1827 in Hartford. Obit.: Luther Darling At his home in this place, Wednesday, April 11, occurred the death of Luther Darling. Mr. Darling was born at Hartford, Conn., June 14, 1823. He was the son of Luther and Hannah Cornell Darling and lived nearly all his life in Salisbury, excepting three years at Oswego. Mr. Darling enlisted May 1, 1861, in Co. C. 34th Infantry, and served for two years and was honorably discharged June 30, 1863. He again enlisted December 21, 1863, in Co. F., of the 16th Heavy Artillery, and served for three years, and was again honorably discharged. August 21, 1865, after the close of the war. His war record was of the best, having been engaged in some of the most important battles of the war, viz; Antietam, West Point, Fredericksburg, Petersburg and Siege of Yorktown, besides many minor engagements. January 8, 1852, he married Alice Beeles, who died in 1890. Mr. Darling then married Sept. 8, 1892, the widow of John Griswold at Salisbury Center, who still survives. He was the father of eleven children, eight of whom are left to mourn his death, viz: Emery of Eatonville, Irving of Burrell's Corners, Frank of Oswego, Henry of Dolgeville, Mrs. John Schuyler of Ingham Mills, Mrs. W. C. Cairns of Utica, Mrs. Clarence Bridenbecker of Utica and Mrs. Geo. Dane of Dolgeville. The funeral was held at the M.E. church of this place Saturday afternoon, the sermon being preached by Rev. S. G. Dopp. The bearers were war veterans. A quartette composed of Mrs. Albert A. Laraway, tenor, and S. G. Dopp, bass, rendered three selections, "Thou Shalt Rest at Eve,"" Cast They Burden on the Lord," and "Eventide." Interment at Dolgeville. The services were under the charge of the G.A.R. In the death of Mr. Darling Salisbury loses on of its oldest and most respected residents and the family have the sympathy of the entire community.
