Notes
a. Note:   Letter from Lavinia Frances Pomeroy to Hannah Darling Spelling and Punctuation as is. Lavinia writes from Colchester, CT. Dec 24th 1815 My Dear cousin Hannah: I little thought when I saw you the last winter that you would so soon present Mr. Darling with two fine Boys. Whilst the hand of God who streached over my devoted head to snatch from me my dear little Noah you were to be blessed with a double? He was to all appearance well at the time you visited me, but alas how transient is all subliminal bliss. In the space of four weeks from that time he was laid beneath the cold clods of the valley. Oh my soul is it possible that those little lips will !!!!..??? Hannah beware idolize those dear babes which are but lent you had I but realized this before I lost my little one half of the poignancy of my feelings had been lost but it was otherwise! When ever I had any ? whatever they were my heart and affections immediately centered on my little son as a sure resting place. But alas it was necessary for me to lern by the most trying way. (in order to realise it)that happiness is not of this world that we must look to a higher power for consolation in the hour of trouble. Oh how differently have I viewed the things of this world since the death of my dear idol! Yes I can sincerely say with the celebrated Dr. Young that my little Noah's last sigh dissolved the charm, the disenchanted Earth lost all its lustre. What is this world by a trying parade to a better a brighter world beyond these rolling spheres where all tears shall be wiped from our eyes, and adieus and sepperations are unknown speaking of adieus reminds me that tomorrow I have to part with a beloved sister and heaven alone can tell if we ever meet again on earth. Then judge me not too severely if my style is mellancholy you know the troubles of my life and that I have been separated from my brothers and sisters since I was a ?maid which always diffuses a mellancholy over me whenever I permit my thoughts to dwell upon the subject - I understand that you have changed your place of residence. Write me how you like the exchange - Mr. Pomeroy thinks some of exchanging his in the spring his father has agreed to ?advance in the spring sufficient for setting him on his feet in merchandise. His cousins in Boston wish him to remove there but I have ever been, and ever shall be adverse to his living in a city. It is my wish that he would visit my brothers and see if that would not be a better place for business- surly I should be happier near my friends and now my dear Hannah it is time that I give place for my Mothers wish for your happiness and Mr. Darlings surely I believe you bewitched my mother when she was with you I verily believe she loves you better than she does me??? - she desires me to write her love to Uncle Ebenezer and Aunt and all the family much love to your brothers and all the friends and acquaintances give my love to cousins Cornwall Roberts and wife. ? Lorena and Bulah your brothers? I almost fell in love with Cornwalls wife tell her I wish them all the happiness we mortals are capable of enjoying in this world - give a great deal of love to Uncle Ebenezers family for my sake present my respects to Mr. Darling and do no I beseech you let him or any one else see this unformed scrawl which I am ashamed only to read over - Brilliancy of imagination and a happy flow of ideas never intrude themselves upon me therefore you must be content with the simple expressions of affectionate heart. Your affectionately Lavinia Frances Pomeroy
