Notes
a. Note:   The note in my father's genealogy that was written ca. 1954 stated that Elizabeth and her sister Henrietta went west. I recently received a note from cousin Wendy on the Darling line making the following statement: "Luther and my John R. Darling had twin sisters Elizabeth and Henrietta born in 1823. Not sure where they were born but they both married and went to California. Francis Jordan (the only remaining sibling of Silas Kimm) sent me a few pages of John Darling's record book. In it, he gives the address of both twins (a date near the entry was 1886). Mrs. Enock Jacobs (Elizabeth) 1217 K Street, Sacramento, CA I found an 1890 register for Sacramento which showed a William Sumner Jacobs living at the same K street address and that he was born in California in 1860 (must have been a son). Henrietta's address was given as: Mrs. H.M. Burke, 418 West 27th Street, Los Angeles, CA. Letter from Eliz Darling Phelps (Jacobs) to Lucy Darling Curtis: Sacramento May 1869-As written Dear Sister, I was very glad to receive a letter from you it is some time since I have heard from Salisbury. I am verry sorry to hear of Johns poor health. I hope he may soon recover, he too has been afflicted it seems none are saved from that cruel messenger, but I hope when our time comes we shall be prepared to meet it seems but a little while ago when we were one unbroken family but now it is so changes. We can hardly make any calculations ?? for if we do it only ends in disappointment. Dear sister you spoke of the death of your boy. The loss of a darling child is the one great sorrow of my life. I felt after Helens death that I could not be comforted but after her dear Father was taken and it was really (?) to make an effort to maintain myself. With a sick child I thought sometimes I should go insane sometimes, but then for I have been enabled to? Every obstacle if our Father above only permits me to enjoy good health I shall not want for anything you spoke about assisting me in your letter I thank you kindly for your good will. I have got along so far without the aid of any one and I hope shall be permitted to get along still I have been quite sick this winter with congestion of the lunges and fear my disease was a dangerous one I coughed night and day, but I am so thankful that I am better and I can truly sympathizw with you in the loss of your first Born poor child but we hope he has gone to a happier home you have 4 important beings entrusted to your care and keeping I feel that parents have truly a great responsibility resting upon themselves to discharge their duties right every way. Home is so pleasant with good children Lucy do try and give your Children a good education that is a fortune they cannot loose. I have felt need of a education so much since I have been thrown on my own resources I could have been well off today if I only had a first class education but that seems to be our misfortune even that was denied us. Where is Isaac and Williams folks does Luther still live where you do? When you write again please see that your envelope is closed for your letter came to me unsealed and open Expect to leave here soon and when you write again I will send you my address. Yours with best wishes and love to all friends E Phelps The letter is in a piece of paper which says the letter was written after the death of Charles Curtis (Lucy's child of Joel Curtis (1st husband)
