a. Note:   Notes passed down in the family say that he was born in 1774. According to another source, he was eleven years of age when his family left for Parr Town, New Brunswick, Canada in 1784. That would place his date of birth about 1772. Jacob S. Mott received a commission as Lieutenant in the Militia of St. John., New Brunswick, Canada 29 Jun 1809. Document Transcribed: By the Honorable Martin Hunter Esquire; President of His Majesty's Council and Commander in Chief of the province of New Brunswick, &c. &c. &c To Jacob S. Mott, Gentleman Greeting: Reposing especial Trust and Confidence, as well in the Care, Diligence, and Circumspection, as in the Loyalty, Courage, and Readiness of You, to do His Majesty good and faithful Service; I Have nominated, constituted, and appointed: And I do, by virtue of the Powers and Authorities to me given by His Majesty, hereby nominate, constitute, and appoint You the said Jacob S. Mott Ensign of a Company in the Regiment of Militia of the City and County of Saint John. You are therefore to take the said Company into your Charge and Care, as Ensign thereof, and duly to exercise both the Officers and Soldiers of that company in Arms. And as they are thereof, hereby commanded to obey You as their Ensign so You are likewise to observe and follow such Orders and Directions, from time to time, as You shall receive from me, or any other Your superior Officer, according to the Rules and Discipline of War, in pursuance of the Trust reposed in You; and for doing, this shall be your Commission.
