Note: (Historical Sketch of John W. Lindsey and family, by Horace B. (for Boyd) Lindsey who was the fourth child of the family.) "John W. Lindsey was of Scotch decent, born in the state of North Carolina, Chatam Co., in 1788. His father James A. Lindsey was a native of Virginia; immigrated to N. Carolina and was a Rebel soldier in the war with Great Britain for the independence of the Thirteen Colonies and was wounded at the battle of the "Cowpens". John W. Lindsey immigrated with his father to Christian Co., Kentucky in 1806 and was married to Peggy Linn and settled in Trigg Co., Kentucky and there established a tan yard and saddle shop, having learned the saddle trade in Fayettsville N. Carolina. His tannery and shop was one and a half miles from the town of Canton on the Cumberland River. He immigrated to Calloway Co., Ky. He left Calloway Co., Ky. on the third of March 1833, and immigrated to LaFayette Co., Missouri; landed there the ninth of March; rented a farm one mile from Lexington and the Independence Road. It was a great thoroughfare to Santa Fe, New Mexico and in 1834 he moved to what is now Benton Co., MO. It was at that time Pettis County. Benton was organized in 1835. Taken from Pettis on the north side and Green Co. of the south side of the Osage River. Warsaw now County Seat of jBenton was located in the fall of 1837 lot sales in Jan. 1838 the county bought 160 acres of U.S. land and laid off in town lots. John W. Lindsey was elected county judge in 1835 which office he held until his death, Jan. 27, 1840; was buried South of Warsaw 3 miles. He was loved and respected by all who knew him."
