1. Title:   LORRAINE MCLAIN STORIES

Notes
a. Note:   Jesse lived in his father's home till he was 22 years old, then he and two friends, Andrew and Jordan Grant traveled toward Missouri, arriving there by the time he was 23 years old. He and the two Grant men had married three sisters, all daughters of Daniel Morgan Stockton & Sarah Goodnight McGowan. *************************************************************************************************** Jesse Jasper McLain was shot and killed on the front porch of their home on the outskirts of Ava, Mo his brother-in-law, James P. Stockton. It seemed that James did not like some gossip he heard Margaret McLain, his niece had said about him so James went to Jesse's home and demanded that Jesse let him talk to Margaret (Jesse's daughter). Jesse refused his brother-in-law's request so James Stockton pulled out his gun and shot Jesse McLain dead on 4 September 1876 on the front porch of his home on the outskirts of Ava, Missouri. James then went to his own brother William's home and argued with him, killing him also. Jesse's son, Newton Jasper "Newt" McLain, who was 16 years old at the time, joined the possee who was search for his uncle who had ran and hid in the fields. Newt, who was one of the posse, found him hiding and shot him dead. It seems from the stories told among the McLains and Stockton families that James Stockton had been drinking the night of the shootings. With her husband deceased and two of her brothers dead, Lydia Jane Stockton McLain had to then sell the farm and moved to Ava, Missouri. Jesse McLain is buried at Ritter cemetery, 4 miles west of Ava, Missouri. Lydia is probably buried there also. Newt McClain (Jesse & Lydia's son) and and his wife, Mira (Clinkingbeard) McLain, moved to Normangee, Leon Co., Texas around 1910 taking with them 6 of their 7 sons and one daughter. At the time this story was shared (1986) it was not known where Mira or Newt had died. Somewhere in Texas. Mira was the twelveth child of Robert and Hannah CLINKINGBEARD. She had five older brothers and 6 older sisters. In 1850 her father was found in Laclede county Missouri census.......
