Katherine was confirmed just before she left Germany. Her mother wanted to be
sure she was confirmed before she left for America. She was the only child
confirmed that day. Everyone cried because it was in preparation for her
 leaving.
Katherine left Germany 5Sep1889 at age 13 with an aunt Lisette Schallenmiller.
Arrived Ellis Island, NY 19Sep1889. Became housekeeper for Weber family, later
for Moffit family until her marriage in 1895.
Monday afternoons she would play cards with five of her friends. Ruth & Ethel
call them the "ten jolly girls" Although there were only six, there was
enough weight for ten. "Nana" was the thinnest of them all. Tuesday was
 bowling day.
Always enjoyed sitting in the sun at a window in the corner of her kitchen.
She would read or sew, sitting on a hope chest near her radio. After husband
died, she got a parakeet which was always kept near to talk to.
Died at Christ Hospital, Jersey City. Age 85 years and 22 days. Buried: George
 Washington Memorial Park, Paramus, NJ
Nana's kitchen had an old wooden ice box that had been converted to a
refrigerator. The compressor was in the basement. The kitchen table was a
round claw foot with a day bed along the wall used as a seat. After lunch, Pop
would always take a short nap on the day bed. Nana & Pop liked to play
pinochle and would frequently be found at the kitchen table, playing.
