In Portchester served 17 years as member of the Official Board of the Sumerfield Methodist Church. Chief Clerk/Accountant for Westchester Lighting Co - employed 23 years. Retired 1935. Married to Annie M MacDonald by James H Hoadley,Pastor Faith Prespyterian Ch. at his residence in New York City 9 Feb 1885. Wit:Sarah Hoadley,Jos.Ogle Jr. In 1913, when living on 104th St, they had two boarders living in house - George Beard Sr. and Lawrence Kobrick. George Beard's widow, Jean, married Frank ONeill(age 71) in 1961. Jean died in 1965. Lawrence Kobrick became engaged to Amy Congalton but they never married. On 14Jul1892, Annie M. and James M. Congalton purchased a house and property on the west side of Beach Street in Kearny from Henry C Geene for $2200. On 15Jan1894 they took out a mortgage from the Howard Savings Institution of Newark. Mortgage was for $1400 for one year at 6% per annum payable semi-annually. Property was described as being on the westerly side of Beach Street beginning at a point 217.5 feet northerly from Oakwood Ave. The property was sold 28May1896 by Annie M. Congalton and James M. Congalton "of the City of New York." He was a ladies man. Daughter Amy frequently complained that they would have had more money had he not spent it on wine and women. Town records of Kearny, NJ show that James M. Congalton was on the Township committee from 1May1893 until 27Nov1894. He was elected chairman by the group on 1May1893 and served as chairman until 7May1894. At the May 2, 1893 meeting he was appointed to the following committees: Finance,Public Buildings,Police,License,Schools. On 12Jun1894 he asked to be relieved as chairman of all committees. It appears as if the work was too much since there were vacancies on the committee and only four active members. One of the other members protested his being relieved since that would place an additional burden on the others. On Nov 27, 1894 he retired from the committee "owing to the fact that my business in New York requires my closest attention from this time on thus preventing me from discharging the duties of township committeeman. I hereby tender my resignation as a member of the township committee of Kearny New Jersey. Same to take effect at once." Medical examination 8May1934 by Dr James H Drakeford found no vision in his right eye and vision in his left eye was 20/40. It was impossible to improve this vision.
