Operated General Store in Fairview, New Jersey, also Postmaster for many years. Fairview 75th Anniversary Brochure - William H. Macdonald elected to membership of the first volunteer fire company 5 Mar 1895. According to death notice in the "Englewood Press", he was a charter member of the Royal Arcanum, whose members acted as pall-bearers. Article also indicates he "had a fondness for gunning and other outdoor sports, and it was his habit to take a brief trip in search of game each season." Served in Union Army. Wrote letter from Seminary Post, Virginia 15 Oct 1867. Handwritten note in the writing of A.I. Congalton indicates that W.H.MacDonald's "estate included a parcel of property consisting of a large house and one acre of land with large frontage on the principal business thoroughfare, and valued at $6500(Encumbered by a mortgage of $3000) also a life insurance premium in the Royal Arcanum of $3000." The widow paid off $1500 of the mortgage. Because of bad advice and increasing costs of taxes and insurance, the widow was unable to satisfy the remaining mortgage and the property was sold at sherriff's sale on April 18, 1912. New owners forced the widow to vacate the property.
