Note: George Mathes Denson and Effie Luke Denson and their family of seven children were a second-generation pioneer family in the New Site Community of eastern Prentiss County, Mississippi. His parents, William Cicero and Sarah Ford Denson, came from Alabama by covered wagon a few years after the end of the Civil War seeking new land and settled in the New Site Community. After William Cicero Denson's death, the farm was sold to George Mathes Denson. Mr. Denson was a farmer and educator. He earned the name of "Tater" Denson by raising and shipping sweet potato slips all over the nation. He taught school for 38 years at Little Brown, New Site, Crossroads and Prospects. Many times he walked eight miles to school and for most of those years received $40 a month salary. He also served two terms in the state legislatlure as representative from Prentiss County.
