Note: John served in the same unit in the Civil War with his brother, James. Both of them spent most of their time in the hospital. James died there. John was medically discharged. While they were in the hospital, their entire unit was arrested (Illinois, 109th Infantry) and they were tried for disloyalty. The unit men were cleared but some of the officers were punished. John was a Corporal, but was not named in the charges.
