Notes
a. Note:   Obituary Mrs. E. P. McEvoy Last week's Reporter made brief mention of the death of Mrs. E. P. McEvoy, at the family home in this city, on the evening of Wednesday, March 17, 1909, at 10 o'clock. The funeral was held Saturday forenoon from Assumption church, requiem high mass being celebrated by Father Lynch. The body was laid to rest in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were all nephews of the deceased, and were as follows: L. E., J. P., J. J., M. J. and J. E. Conway and C. T. Nolan. Catherine Conway was born at St. Columban Canada, July 3, 1832. In May of 1842 she moved with her father to West Osgoode, Canada. On January 16, 1861 she was united in marriage to E. P. McEvoy at South Gloucester. The family came to Palo Alto County in 1871, settling on a farm near Osgood, where they continued to reside up to 1902, when they came to Emmetsburg. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. McEvoy, five girls and three boys, one son and three daughters have preceded her to the great beyond. The surviving members of the family are the husband and two sons, James J., Gilmore City, IA. and E. J. of this place; and two daughters, Mrs. M. R. Bradley of near Graettinger, and Miss Josie of Emmetsburg. Emmetsburg Democrat, Wednesday, March 24, 1909 MRS. E. P. McEVOY IS DEAD. Expired at Her Home in This City Wednesday Evening. Wednesday night, about 10 o'clock, Mrs. E. P. McEvoy passed away at her home in this city. She had been ill for only five days. At first her condition seemed somewhat serious, but the early part of the week she rallied and felt confident that she would be able to be about in a day or two. Wednesday evening about 9:30 she suddenly took a change for the worse and before the members of the family could be gathered, she expired. Her rather unexpected passing was a severe shock to her aged husband and to her sons and daughters. Mrs. McEvoy had always been a rather rugged woman and was very seldom sick. The funeral was held Saturday forenoon. It was very largely attended, many coming from all parts of the county to be present at the last sad rites over her remains. A requiem high mass was celebrated at Assumption church by Father Lynch. The interment was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were John and Michael Conway, of this city, L.E., James P., and John Conway, of Graettinger, and Charles T. Nolan, all but Mr. Nolan being nephews of the deceased. Catherine Conway, was born at Columban, Canada, July 3, 1832. Hence she was 76 years old. In May, 1842, she moved with her parents to West Osgood, Canada. January 16, 1861, she was married to E. P. McEvoy at South Gloucester, Quebec. In March, 1871, Mr. and Mrs. McEvoy moved to this county, settling on a farm near Osgood, where they lived until April 25, 1902, when they became residents of Emmetsburg, subsequently residing in this city. The surviving members of the family are the husband, two sons and two daughters. James J. lives at Gilmore City. Mrs. M. R. Bradley near Graettinger and E. J. and Miss Josie in this city. The death of Mrs. McEvoy takes from our community one of the most widely known, respected and helpful pioneer women of our county. She came to this locality when settlers were comparatively new. She witnessed, during her 38 years residence in Palo Alto, the gradual transformation of tracks of wild prairie into a thrifty, substantial agricultural community. What labor, what patience, what energy is required to make the changes in the home, social and spiritual life of our county that have taken place since that time. The important, the leading part that Mrs. McEvoy took in this great work is well known to hundreds of our readers. She was ever a humble, sincere, zealous helper in every worthy cause that would promote the welfare of her friends, associates and the neighborhood in general. In all her undertakings, she sought the guidance and the assistance of Providence. Who will doubt, judging from the edifying Christian life she lead, that she was not especially favored by him whose succor no one solicits in vain. Mrs. McEvoy was an ideal home woman, ever kind, loving and thoughtful, ever watchful less the interests that were dearest to her might be jepardized, ever ready to make any sacrifice for the comfort of those who were bound to her by the fondest and most enduring of ties. She was blest with a reasonably long career, every day, every hour of which was consecrated to praiseworthy purposes and exemplary, and ennobling deeds. Who can place a proper value on the worth of such a woman? Surely not the individual of ordinary mental vision. The sympathy of all is extended to her sorrowing husband, her faithful companion of 48 years, and to her respected sons and daughters, who reflect so truely the motives and achievements of the splendid Christian mother who has been called to her eternal reward. Note: Those who came from a distance Saturday to attend the funeral of Mrs. E. P. McEvoy were Mr. and Mrs. M. T. McEvoy, of Mondamin, Iowa; Richard McEvoy, of Missouri Valley; Mr. and Mrs. James Biggins and Mr. Lacey, of Livermore; Mrs. E. P. Finn, of Rolfe; C. H. Cookinham and John Martin, of Ayshire; Mr. and Mrs. J. J. McEvoy, of Gilmore; and Mrs. Martin Laughlin, of Graettinger. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
