Note: Obit of Mary Ann Conway Hickey 1943 Posted by Cathy Joynt Labath <labaths@@att.net> on Sat, 30 Oct 1999 Surname: Conway, Hickey, Berschorner, McEwan, O'Dell, King From unknown newspaper around 02/07/1943: Mrs. John Hickey Dies at Lamont, Iowa Mrs. John Hickey, for many years an esteemed resident of this locality, died Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Peter Toole of Lamont, Ia. The remains arrived in Emmetsburg monday morning and were taken to the home of her son, Lawrence Hickey northeast of this city. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning in St. Thomas church here, with the Rev. Edward Vollmer officiating at a requiem high mass. The pallbearers, all grandchildren of the deceased, were Francis Beschorner, Joe McEwan, Leo Hickey, Richard Hickey, Leo O'Dell, and Robert O'Dell. Burial was in St. John's cemetery here. The Foy funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Mary Ann Conway was born in Canada April 6, 1867, and was 75 years and 10 months old at the time of death. She was married to John Hickey in 1887 at Emmetsburg and they established their home in Vernon township. Mr. Hickey died May 10, 1940. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Margaret Berschorner, Mrs. Bridget O'Dell, Michael, Lawrence, and Charles Hickey all of here, and Mrs. Peter Toole of Lamont, Iowa. A daughter, Mrs. Ed McEwan, died in 1934, and three sons, John, James and Daniel died in youth. One sister, Mrs. F.J. King lives northeast of Emmetsburg. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Charles Nolan, and four brothers, Larry, Tom, Jim and Jack Conway. Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives from whom Mrs. Hickey has been taken. Those from a distance who attended the funeral rites here included: Mrs. Alice Libert and daughter, Mrs. C.J. Williams, and the latter's son all of Iowa City, William Nolan of Chicago, James J.Nolan of Cedar Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Teil and Mrs. James Conway of Britt, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Toole of Lamont, Ia. and Mrs. P.J. Hickey and two daughters of Oran, Ia. Another obit: Emmetsburg Democrat Remains of Mrs. John Hickey Laid to Rest Services held at Emmetsburg Mrs. John Hickey, 75, one of hte widely known women of Palo Alto County, died at Lamont, near Dubuque, Iowa, Sunday. Mrs. Hickey had been visiting her daughter, Mrs. Kathleen Toole, at this place. She went to Lamont shortly after New Year's. She had been ill for about a week. The remains were returned to Emmetsburg where they were prepared for burial by the Foy Funeral Home. The funeral was held Wednesday morning. At 9:30 o'clock a requiem mass was celebrated in St. Thomas church in this city, with the assistant pastor, Rev. Edward Vollmer, officiating. Interment was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were Francis Berschorner, Joe McEwan, Leo Hickey, Richard Hickey, Leo O'Dell, and Robert O'Dell. Mary Ann Conway was born in Canada on April 6, 1868. When she was a young girl the family located in Palo Alto county. Miss Conway was united in marriage to John Hickey over a half century ago. They followed the occupation of farming and were widely known and respected in the northern part of Palo Alto county where they resided so many years. Mr and Mrs. Hickey were the parents of ten sons and daughters. Three sons, John James and Daniel Hickey all died when they were quite young. A daughter, Mrs. Ed McEwan passed away a few years ago. Mr. Hickey died about four years ago. Mrs. Hickey is survived by the following son and daughters, all of whom live in the northern part of our county: Mrs. Margaret Berschorner, Mrs. Bridget O'Dell, Michael J. Hickey, Lawrence C. Hickey, and Mrs. Kathleen Toole, who resides at Lamont, Iowa. There is also a sister, Mrs. Frank King, of Osgood USGenWeb Palo Alto County, IA
