a. Note:   Obit of Lawrence E Conway - 1928 Posted by Cathy Joynt Labath <labaths@@att.net> on Sat, 30 Oct 1999 Surname: Conway, McEvoy, Collins, Hickey, Drew, Kliegl, Frederick, Conlon, King, Nolan Around 03/22/1928, Newspaper unknown: Late L.E. Conway Led Useful Life Genial and Ready Served on County Council of Defense and County Mutual Board In our last issue we mentioned briefly as we were going to press, the death of L.E. Conway of Vernon township which occurred Thursday forenoon. The funeral was held on Saturday. Services were conducted in the Catholic Church at Graettinger, the pastor, Father J.J. Kelly celebrating a requiem high mass and preaching an impressive sermon in which he paid a fitting tribute to the worth of Mr. Conway as a member of his church and as a citizen. He was assisted by Rev. Leo McEvoy a relative of the deceased. The burial was in St. John's cemetery south of this city. There was a large attendance of relatives, old neighbors and friends. The pall bearers were Geo. Kliegl, john Goeders, Andrew Gappa, Peter O'Leary, Martin Laughlin and Michael Foley. Lawrence E Conway was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John (Collins) Conway. He was born at Ottawa, Canada, July 30, 1858. He was 69 years of age. Mr. Conway was united in marriage in the old Catholic Church northwest of this city to Miss Teresa A. Hickey, February 7, 1887. Besides his widow, he leaves to mourn his passing eight sons and daughters. They are Mrs. I. E Drew of Cylinder, Mrs. J. A. Kliegl, J.W. Conway of Graettinger, Mrs. C.A. Frederick of Cylinder, John L. of Osgood, Ambrose of Estherville and Mrs. Delbert Conlon of Ayrshire and Leo of Graettinger. His death is also mourned by four brothers-James P. and J.J. of Graettinger, Thomas of Estherville, and Michael of St. Louis, and by two sisters, Mrs. J.W. Hickey and Mrs. Frank King of Graettinger. Another daughter, Mrs. Chas. Nolan, died in Emmetsburg a few years ago. Mr. Conway's parents came to Palo Alto county from Canada in 1870. They lived close to the present town of Osgood for many years. Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Conway resided on their Vernon township farm for 36 years. Mr. Conway was well known to the early settlers of Palo Alto as well as to those who located later in our county. He was open hearted, genial, jolly and off handed and he made friends easily. He was a close, observing reader, a pleasing, interesting converser and an all around good fellow in the popular sense of the term. He was eager to acknowledge the good qualities that characterized those with whom he came in contact. There was not a dull hour in a gathering of neighbors or friends when Mr. Conway was present and was feeling hearty. The writer served with him for a couple of years on the county council of defense during the World War. We found him one of the most patriotic, useful, pratical and reasonable members of the organization. He stood for a square deal for all including those with whom he might not always agree in matters under consideration. He was for a long time a director of the County Medical Insurance association. He gave the publick intelligent, honest, faithful service. He was a dutiful, provident husband and a forebearing, loving father. He was at all times affable and hospitable. He was true to his convictions and to his friends. He longed ardently for the success for the principles for which he stood. For nearly a quarter of a century he labored tirelessly, expectantly for the upbuilding and the betterment of his home community, our county and our state. The hundreds who knew him lament his passing and will long cherish fondly memories of his well spent life and his many generous deeds. Mrs. Conway, the worthy sons and daughters and the bereft brothers and sisters have the sympathy of our many readers in their sorrow.
