Notes
a. Note:   1787 -- On July 28th, at Bedford, New Hampshire, Frederick was born to Captain John Goffe & Elizabeth (Coston). Note that up until Frederick, all the Goffe`s spelled their name "Goffe." Frederick was the first generation to drop the "e". 1811 - October 22, Malinda (Curtis or Crandall) were united in marriage at Locke, Cayuga County, New York. 1812 - Frederick was in the War of 1812 in McMahan`s Regiment, New York Militia as a Corporal. From the files of the Goff/Gough Archives, is a copy of the War of 1812 pension application for Melinda (Crandall) Goff, widow of Frederick Goff. As the application states, Frederick Goff enlisted at Summer Hill, Cayuga County, NY and served as a teamster in Captain Martin Barber`s Company. 1837 - (the following information is from "History of Cass County, Mi., page 393): Frederick Goff and his family came from Cayuga County, N.Y. and settled on land entered by his brother, John, on Section 20, in the vicinity of what is now called Goff`s Lake. The date of this settlement is 1837. Frederick Goff, being a carpenter and joiner, by trade, and lumber at this time, being within hauling distance, Frederick built a small frame house, which was the first frame building in the township. In about two years after his settlement, he died, and his widow, Melinda Goff, whose maiden name was Curtis, and her two sons A. and Silas, continued to improve the farm and make for themselves a comfortable home. Frederick Goff married Melinda Crandall (born 1794-96 VT, died 1872-80 IA) on 23 Oct 1811 at Summer Hill in Cayuga Co, NY. The family moved from New York to Marcellus, Cass County, MI where Frederick Goff died 7 Oct 1838. Melinda Goff remained in Michigan until about 1870 and then moved to Iowa with some of her children and their families. She was living in Pilot Rock, Cherokee County, IA on 12 Nov 1872 when she made application for widow`s pension. (I'm guessing that this passage refers to Arabet and Cyrus, not Silas) from "History of Cass County, MI page 393 "The next to join the vanguard of pioneers of Marcellus were Frederick Goff and Joseph Bair, with their families. Mr. Goff came from Cayuga County, NY and settle on land entered by his brother John, on section 20, in the vicinity of what is now called Goff's lake. The date of his settlement is 1837. Ephraim and Eben, sons of John Goff, came to the county in 1839, and settled in the Goff neighborhood, and John finally came and spent his last years here. The representatives of the Goff family have been very numerous in this township, and her citizens are indebted to them for many of the early improvements. Nearly all of them are now sleeping in the family burial ground on the west side of the lake which bears their name." Goff Cemetery is located on the farm of Charles Etter in section 20 of Marcellus Township. It is located on private property. Therefore permission should be sought by the property owner before going on to land that cemetery is located on. This listing was done by Amelia Castle and contributed to the site by: Judy Tobias. As of 2001 this cemetery was overrun with brush, and some of the stones are broken and some are unreadable. It would be a great project for a local boy scout troup, etc., to repair it. I don't know if that is a possibility or not, but it could easily be lost in time. FRED Sr. - born July 28, 1787, died Oct 7, 1839 - War of 1812. FOOTSTONE Served as a Corporal in MCMAHAN'S REGIMENT, NEW YORK MILITIA.
