Note: According to Hiram`s Civil War pension papers obtained from the National Archieves on April 20, 1987: Hiram enlisted in the Civil War on 9 Nov. 1861 at Wayne, MI (pension papers also show he enlisted in Galena, MI. Sept. 1, 1862) as a Private and began duty Dec. 19, 1861 at Niles, MI, Company A, 12th Regiment of Michigan Volunteers. He was stationed near Jackson, Tennessee. On 23 May 1862, surgeon sent him to hospital No. 2, Benton Barracks and gave him furlough for 20 days because of physical diasbility. He was in Capt. Joseph Harper`s Company. Hiram was 30 years old, 5`6" tall, dark complextion with brown eyes and black hair and a famer by profession. He was on furlough to Little Prairie Round in Cass Co, MI, from May 23 to June 12 1862. He was to rejoin his company at St Louis. He requested additional time for furlough but died before the expiration of his furlough. Dr. Nathaniel D. Thomas saw him 1st or 2nd day after he arrived home on furlough, laboring under a fever but Hiram died about 8 days thereafter from typhoid fever which he contacted in the service. He was married March 30, 1857 at age 35, to Mary Manly Nichols, age 30. They were married by M. E. Mesinger, J.P., in the presence of Warren W. Nichols (her brother) and George Lewis (who later becomes her husband). Hiram had lived in Marcellus 18 years or more before entering the war. Hiram was married twice. The first time to Polly Arnold but there were no children. The second marriage was to Mary Nichols, and they had two daughters, Ida and Ava. Mary Nichols Goff remarried 4 months later on Oct 23, 1862 to James Huff. HIRAM, son of Fred Sr., died 1862 - Civil War.
