a. Note:   Capt. Goffe's house, standing near the mouth of the Cohas Brook, had been used as a place of refuge upon an alarm of Indians. Although inadequate to afford protection for all who sought safety, in 1746 construction made it a larger garrison, which became known as Stark's Fort. No doubt it contributed its share toward the safety of the frontier during that anxious period.
