Lists sources. 2010504.ged from Cheryl Harmon Bills <cherylb@ida.net> updated 3 Apr 2002. Says born 2 Apr 1788. There seems to be some confusion over which Rachel married Major Peter Butler. The Descendents of John and Rachel Cooke Murphy claims that it was this Rachel. The same person sent me some notes of a descendent of Major Peter Butler which said: "My Great Great Great Grandfather, John Murphy and his wife, Rachael Cooke Murphy's first child, William, was born 16 Feb 1776. William Murphy married Nancy Ferguson. William and Nancy's daughter, also named Rachel, married Major Peter Butler. Major Peter Butler and his wife, Rachael Murphy Butler immigrated from Kentucky to Warren County, Illinois. Here they built a Fort, where all the neighbors gathered when there were Indian uprisings. Later, they, along with Rachel's sister, Margaret and her husband Elijah Davidson, led a wagon train to Oregon. They were pioneers in both Illinois and Oregon." by Don Bowton. I think Don may have got mixed up in who Rachel's parents were as if Rachel Butler, his ancestor, and Margaret Davidson were sisters, then it is this Rachel who married Major Peter Butler--just as the Murphy book claims. This info came to me from Martha Haut. "Martha Haut" <mfhaut@hotmail.com> [NOTE 5/2007: you can see this would not be possible as the Rachael Murphy who is daughter of William wasn’t born until 1811. Major Peter Butler and Rachel Murphy were married in 1811, their first child born in 1812] ______________ 10.
