East Washingtonian Pomeroy, Garfield County, Washington Thursday, 31 December 1936 Page 1, col. 1 Mrs. Ed Malone is Laid to Rest Was gentlewoman beloved by friends; had been ill for many years An invalid for 35 years, Mrs. Ed Malone passed away at her home in the early afternoon of December 26, 1936, at the age of 64 years, eight months, seven days. Born in Buena Vista, Oregon, April 19, 1872, Susan P. Ground was one of the several children of Mr. and Mrs. William B. Ground. When a child of five she came with her parents to what is now Asotin county, but the outbreak of the Nez Perce Indian war caused the family to go to Walla Walla to remain until the trouble was over. The death of her mother when Susan was yet a small girl caused a change in family plans. She lived with relatives at Athena, Oregon, and later in Asotin and Garfield counties, Washington. On November 29, 1891, Susan ground and Ed Malone were married at Lewiston, Idaho. They made their home on a farm in the upper Deadman country until Mr. Malone's death July 4, 1923, when she came to Pomeroy to reside. She left surviving four daughters: Mrs. C. E. Wallace, Clarkston; Mrs. Forest G. Murdock, San Jose, California; Mrs. John Weaver and Mrs. J. A. Butler, both of Pomeroy; and one son, Ralph, of Seattle. There are also 11 grandchildren; three brothers, Ed and Elijah of Lewiston, and William B. Ground of Pomeroy; one half brother, Walter Cuthbert of Lewiston; and two aunts, Mrs. Ira Ruark and Mrs. A. H. Mendenhall, both of Pomeroy. During the long period of physical impairment due to arthritis, Mrs. Malone bore her affliction cheerfully, and made the responsibility of those who cared for her as light as possible. She was a member of the Christian church. Her patience, her thoughtfulness for others, her appreciation of the ministrations of loved ones, her fortitude in suffering and resignation to things she could not help, were outstanding characteristics of Mrs. Malone. She was a true, Christian gentlewoman. Funeral services were held from the C. M. Vassar chapel at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Rev. J. Raymond Fife of the Christian church officiating. Honorary pallbearers were W. W. Richardson, Dr. John Gilbert, W. B. Morris, Vint Gilbert, N. A. Thornton, and Roy Van Ausdle. Active pallbearers were Harry Malone, Bert Malone, Alva Ruark, Ed Bailles, Verle Whitaker, and George Medved. Interment was in the city cemetery. ----------------------- Pomeroy City Cemetery, Garfield County, Washington, copied from records in the Garfield County Library.
