Note: Joseph's Social Security was issued in New York, before 1951. He is listed as a laborer on his son's birth certificate. When he applied for Social Security, he used the name Joe. (#134-07-8301) and he lived at 250 W Lafayette St, Detroit, MI. In the 1910 census, Joseph is listed as a railroad brakeman. His father was born in Ireland and mother, in MI. At one time, according to his son, Burton, he worked for a Bridge construction firm, tossing hot rivets to others on the bridge, who caught them in buckets. Joseph was known for being lucky. He always fell into great deals in business and real estate, but just as quickly did something to loose it all. According to Irene Major Scahill, Joe was divorced based on his alcoholism and abusive treatment. The one time Joe visited his son's family, in Villa Park, IL., he showed little interest in the children, stayed only a short time and was on his way. The older grandchildren remember seeing him walk up the sidewalk and being startled at how young he looked and how much their father resembled him. His draft registration, in 1917, described him as tall and slender with brown eyes and black hair. Joseph died in January 1966 in Michigan, where he is buried.
