Note: Herbert James was called 'Bert' and should not be confused with his nephew. Edward's son James Herbert, was born in 1900. Bert was the last of the children born in Canada. Although he gave his birth as 1890 on his draft registration, the June 13, 1900 census gives his age as 11 years and birth as October, 1888, making him 12 later that year. His year of immigration was 1892 at age 4. His death record shows him two years younger. Bert's Draft Registration shows his occupation as 'Sailor' with a home address of 815 Griswold St, Port Huron, MI, Precinct 6. He was described as medium height and weight with brown eyes and dark brown hair. He was also noted as being 'nearly blind in right eye.' In the census of 1910, he was a wheelman at 'Great Lakes'. His obituary, in the Port Huron Times Herald (Jan 5, 1939 Pg 7) adds that he sailed on the steamer, Smith-Thompson. His death record can be found in Book 8 p 186, St.Clair Co, MI. It shows that Herbert was a 'Schef on boat' and that he died of a cerebral hemorrhage; having suffered from arterial hypertension and chronic nephritis.
