Note: Ethel's husband Joe, left her and Burton sometime after 1920 (they are together in the census) and she had to support herself and her son. As a cashier in a hardware store, she earned $9.00 a week. Later, it was extremely difficult for a woman, over forty, to find employment. By the time Ethel was 50 she was working in Buffalo, NY. Around that time, her son and family were transferred there. Ethel looked much younger than her age and insisted that the grandchildren call her Peg to hide the fact that she was a grandmother. She took several other jobs when the pay was better and eventually ended up as a baby sitter in Hollywood, CA. She loved to talk of the movie stars and the fact that she (as a maid) lived next door to Yvonne DeCarlo, a famous star at the time. She eventually moved to New York to live with Burt and Irene. Toward the end of her life, Peg lived in the house of a care-giver. Irene, her daughter-in-law, gave the information for the death certificate and realized later that that there was an error. Horace was the name of Peg's uncle. Her father's name was Erwin. Peg's Mother was born in MI and her father in NY (1920 census). She left some Michigan real estate to Scahill.
