a. Note:   In just a few generations, the Scahill name was spelled: Schall, Schyall, Sca?dhi, Schahae, Seahel, and Scull. By the time it got to Burton, it was spelled Scahill and
 and rhymed with Pal.
 James owned land in 1850 and was registered as a voter in Biddulph Twsp, Ontario. He and his family are recorded as Catholics in the 1851 census, where the name is spelled Schall. He and Winifred were of Irish descent, born in Ireland.
 The 1851census gives his age (for the next birthday) as 36, which would mean that James birth was in 1816 or 1817.
 In the 1861 census, he is also 36 on his next birthday. Winifred, however is ten years older. The spelling in 1861 was Scahel. In the 1871 census, his name is spelled Schyall and he is listed as a 65 year old farmer, married to Winifred, age 60.
