a. Note:   Lyman was 33 in the 1850 census (Carlton Twsp, Orleans Co, NY).
  He enlisted for the Civil War on Aug 25, 1864, signing with an X. His occupation was sawyer. War records, obtained from the US National Archive, shows enlistment at Lockport, NY. His Company Description Book shows he was sworn in at a Hartland NY location. Both are in Niagara Co.
 He served in Company E, 8th Regiment of the N. Y. Calvery. His enlistment form shows that he was born in Canada and noted that he had blue eyes, brown hair, fair complexion and was 5' 8" tall.
 His report of Jan 27, 1865, Alexandria, VA, shows he was due $200 of his bounty (because he was) 'Killed in action Oct 7, 1864 in Columbia Furnace, VA.'
 On his March and April, 1865 record he is shown as a 'Prisoner of war since Oct 7, 1864 due U.S. Clothing al $6.18. According to his pension record, Charlotte was officially named his widow on Sep 20, 1865.
